Bento Blessing #3: Zero is just a number.

Looks like the kids like the positive/negative cut outs I am making out of the cucumbers so why not repeat it? Today’s version is just sliced cucumbers and a number “0” (zero) cookie cutter.  The Man got the ends of the cucumbers, sliced up. No wastage!

Halving a cantaloupe in two, I scooped up the seeds out of the middle, then cut the cantaloupe so that I had slices that were “0” shaped  (similar to the nectarine pictures below). The same “0” cookie cutter that were used to cut the cucumber was used to cut out cantaloupe ovals.

I also split a nectarine in half, then cut each half into “0” shape slices (see below). Once sliced, I cut them into slivers.

Another fruit addition was a pear, I cut one pear into 4 slices and let them soak in some lemon water. I split one slice between the Boy and Girl, while the Man got 3 slices.

The kids’ Bento Box contents: Fruit cup consisting of cantaloupe ovals, and nectarine slivers on top. Cucumber positive/negative ovals. Raisins in a small silicon cup topped with a slice of dried mango. Slices of pear. Cheese quesadillas cut up with a “person” cookie cutter, with a few “Gusher” candies on top.

The Man’s  Bento Boxes: Fruit cup of cantaloupe ovals. Cucumber slices. Raisins in a silicon cup topped with a slice of dried mango. 3 pieces of pear. 2 apples and a nectarine. One chocolate pudding cup. One Nature Valley granola bar. One slice of pizza (leftover from a guys’ night out last night). Container of grapes. 3 slices fresh cheese quesadilla (not shown, it was still in the oven!). Small container of prunes. (If that last addition doesn’t show love, I don’t know what does. 😉 )

Today’s Bento Blessing: I took inspiration from the number “O” and when we discussed the box today, I told the kids that no matter how low or useless and worthless they feel (or have someone make you feel) sometimes, God still sees huge value in them. He has given us all something special in each of us and we are more precious in His sight than we can imagine. He can turn a zero into a perfect ten, just like I added the strips of nectarine (to symbolize the number 1) – turning “O” into “10.” Lord, help my kids to know their value in and of themselves as a child of God. Help their confidence to be strong. Help them to have friends who build them up and help them to be a friend who does the same. Please help me to be the kind of wife and mother who encourages her husband and children.  Thank you for the opportunity the Girl has to be Head Monitor at the school. We know all glory belongs to you and we pray you will guide her to do the best she can.

Today’s Bento Bonus: I split a pack of Gushers between the two, and am thrilled with that, instead of them having a whole pack as they normally would have. Their jewel-coloured tones fit in well with today’s theme as I put them in with the “person” quesadillas and called them “jewels.” The kids got the reference that they are so precious in the sight of God, and to me as well.

Bento Bonus from yesterday: I learned NOT to include dry items like crackers and cookies in with wet items such as fruit even if they are separated by silicon cups. All 3 complained of slightly soggy crackers from yesterday’s lunch. Note to self: either wrap cookies up in foil/saran wrap or pack in separate container.

Bento Blessings #2: The jury is in!

It’s official: The kids love their Bento boxes. They came home jazzed over all the little pieces that made up their lunches and reported that there was more than enough food for the day. The Man seemed quite happy with his as well although he did mention a little more food wouldn’t hurt.

Jam sandwiches were cut into flower shapes (and the leftover scraps became my breakfast).

I cut up some cheese into square slices and poked little holes in them with a plastic pick to mimic the holes found in the Swiss cheese crackers that accompanied them.

Applies were cut into slices and one slice was decorated but cutting strips of the skin away leaving a nice strip pattern.

I boiled 3 eggs and the kids’ eggs were decorated by inserting 2 green plastic picks at the top to look like eyes. I cut away a little portion of the egg for a smile.

Cucumbers were sliced and then I used the numbers “2” and “5” to signify the grades that the Boy and Girl are in, to cut out positive/negative images.

I also scooped out cantaloupe balls and ate the leftover scraps for breakfast. There was enough that when the Boy came home from school, he had the rest for a snack.

The kids’ Bento Box contents: Flower shaped jam sandwiches. 2 Oreo cookies. Silicon cup filled with cantaloupe balls and cucumber numbers on top. Cucumber negative slices were also included. 2 slices of apples, one decorated. One boiled egg. Cheese and crackers.

The Man’s Bento Boxes: Silicon cup filled with cantaloupe balls. Cucumber slices. Apples. Cheese and crackers. One banana. Jam sandwich cut into 2, separated by 3 Oreo cookies. One container of grapes.

Today’s Bento Blessing: Lord, no matter how weird or different things are, you are always the Same. Please be with the kids today as they go through their 2nd full day of school and help them cope with the fluidity of the week as their school organizes the classes and teachers.

Today’s Bento Bonus: The Boy told me 2 of his friends told him his lunch was cool.

Bento Bonus from yesterday: Learned that the kids loved the plastic picks that I included in their boxes, to “spear” the fruit, etc. The Boy told me he and his best friend were having mini sword fights with them during lunch. A quick talk about “the picks are only meant for the fruit/vegetables in your lunch” was given. Lord help me.

    Welcome to Bento Blessings.

I am not a chef, much less a good cook. Why am I doing this? What’s a Bento Box anyway? I guess a good place to start would be to read my “about” post – where I’ve laid my heart open and shared why I am starting this journey of Bento Blessings, packing healthy and fun lunches 5 days a week, for an entire year. I hope I can see this project through and that our family unit will reap the rewards as a whole. If you’d like to join along, you are welcome to.

Bento Blessings #1: My very first Bento box!

My Bento boxes that I ordered have not arrived so I am using some old tupperware which I hope will work. The whole premise of a Bento box is that if you pack it tight enough, the contents won’t move around and so everything should stay in its place.

I cut up slices of cheese and rolled them up with slices of ham, and cut in 2 lengthwise to fit the containers.

Filled a silicon cup with pretzel sticks and topped with 2 round baby cookies (Marie brand)

Added a big handful of grapes.

The gummy worm will be a treat for the kids.

    Cut up nectarine slices.

Today’s Bento Blessing: Lord, you know the desires of my heart to feed the kids and the Man healthy, and fun lunches. I pray that you give me strength, creativity and a burden to bless my family in this way. Help them eat and enjoy their lunches!

Today’s Bento Bonus: I am a complete newbie at this, so I worry whether I packed enough food for the kids. I guess I’ll find out after school.
